Hope for Children-Ethiopia

About HFC-Ethiopia

Hope for Children-Ethiopia is an indigenous, apolitical, non-faith based NGO that was established in response to the staggering AIDS pandemic as its full force began to be felt by the children of Ethiopia and their families. The organization provides sustainable and comprehensive community-based care and support to the growing number of HIV/AIDS affected families and vulnerable children in Ethiopia.

HFC-Ethiopia’s vision is to enable HIV/AIDS affected children and families to live with dignity in their local communities while ensuring that their basic needs are met. To achieve this vision, HFC-Ethiopia provides essential services to children who have lost their parents to HIV/AIDS, to children who are HIV-infected, and to their caregivers.

HFC-Ethiopia’s work has primarily focused on the Gulele Sub City, a particularly poor area of Addis Ababa with approximately 4,500 households. However, additional programs have begun in Lafto, another poor area of Addis, and Babile, a town in rural eastern Ethiopia near Harar with a particularly high HIV prevalence rate and virtually no services.  Further expansion is planned both in Addis Ababa and in other towns in Ethiopia.

There are now over 800 children registered with HFC-Ethiopia who have been affected by HIV/AIDS. This number continues to grow daily. HFC-Ethiopia operates a variety of projects and programs for these children and their families, including:

  • Child Sponsorship
  • Group Homes for AIDS Orphans
  • Youth Learning Center
  • Psychosocial Support
  • Home-Based Care and the HFC Hospice
  • HIV Education and Outreach
  • Village Savings & Loan Groups
  • Legal Project
  • Kindergarten
  • Saturday Program and Scouts
