HFC-Ethiopia

Hope for Children (HFC-Ethiopia) was founded in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in 2001, by Yewoinshet Masresha in response to the staggering AIDS pandemic as its full force began to be felt in the country. As the first Ethiopian NGO dedicated to this work, HFC-Ethiopia has provided comprehensive community-based care and support to HIV/AIDS affected families and vulnerable children in Ethiopia.

Yewoinshet has been recognized as one of Africa’s leading AIDS activists and was recently nominated for the African Union Nelson Mandela Award. Her work has been featured on CNN, ABC, and Voice of America, as well as in the Washington Post and several other major newspapers as an example of what one grassroots organization can accomplish in the fight against AIDS.

There are nearly 900 children sponsored at HFC-Ethiopia. The organization operates a variety of projects and programs for these children and their families, including:

  • Child Sponsorship
  • Youth Center
  • Group Homes for AIDS Orphans
  • Psychosocial Support
  • Home-Based Care and the HFC Hospice
  • HIV Education and Outreach
  • Village Savings & Loan Groups
  • Legal Project
